We are a registered charity and in 2018 we opened a visitor centre and café near Newbury in Greenham Common’s restored 1950’s grade II listed airfield control tower. In it we provide a window into Greenham Common’s past, and a centre for enjoying its present now that the Common is again a public space shared with nature. The area has a long history, including most notably as a hub of airborne activity in WW2 and the Cold War, and as site of peace protest during some of this period.
We have a thriving café and visitor spaces for everyone who visits Greenham Common to enjoy, and in our first 18 months we have established a museum collection and events programme to help advance our education and community goals. We aim to have a strong community connection in all our spaces, with committed volunteers who help lead us in everything that we do. We are hugely dependent on support from members of the public to remain open and a great place to visit.
We are always seeking enthusiastic volunteers to work with us. Although we are currently closed we believe community spaces such as ours will be an important in post-Covid19 recovery. Those that love working with the public directly help us in the café and guiding the public through our exhibitions and telling Greenham Commons stories. Others help with the exhibitions, fundraising, marketing, administration and support of facilities at the Tower (much of this work continues whilst we are closed). We are very focused on the health and safety of our visitors and staff so we will prioritise social distancing when we reopen.
We open during the day from Thursday through to Sunday all year. If you can offer us just a little regular time during these periods or help with support matters at other times during the week then we would love to hear from you. If you’d consider becoming a Trustee or help with the management then please do see the separate Trustees advert on our website.
We aim to be a warm, friendly and supportive environment and have volunteers of all backgrounds, ages and skills. Don’t worry if you feel that you don’t have all the skills; enthusiasm and ideas are most important to us. If there are skills you want to grow then our existing people can help and we hope you will flourish with us.
If this sounds like you then please, please do have a look for more information online at https://www.greenhamtower.org.uk/volunteering/ , or send us a message with your interests and availability by post (Greenham Control Tower, Bury Bank Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG19 8BZ) or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
