Each year places of interest around the country contribute to the Heritage Open Days initiative by offering family fun days and other special events. These are designed to encourage people to explore the wealth of wonders on their doorsteps. In this extraordinary year things are, inevitably, a little different.
Greenham Control Tower is offering guided tours of the tower itself to small groups as usual on the weekend of September 12th and 13th, the designated dates for Heritage Open Day events. For those who can’t make it to the tower though and for those who’d like to find out more about the remarkable history of Greenham Common, we have a specially made film.
This virtual tour starts at the tower then takes in the historic runway, USAF control centre and fire plane before peering into the intimidating bunkers which once housed the frighteningly powerful cruise missiles. The narration explains the significance of each stop with the help of archive photographs.
